Situated halfway between Mahon and Ciutadella, Es Mercadal almost
certainly derives its name from the market held here from the 14th
century. The town lies at the foot of Monte Toro, Menorca's highest
mountain.
Although tourism plays little part in the town's life, it is certainly
worth a visit if you are in the vicinity. Several restaurants here serve
authentic Menorcean food and Es Mercadal is also known for its almond
biscuits and manufacture of sandals, or abarcas.
Es Mercadal holds its annual fiesta in honour of St Martin on the 3rd
weekend in July. Visitors are welcome.
