Son
Parc is a small resort on the north coast of Menorca
approximately 20kms west of Mahon and 7kms east of
Fornells. The journey from the airport takes about 20 minutes.
Son
Parc has two main attractions, one is the golf course (the
only one on Menorca). The greens are well set out and although I
am no expert, it does not look too challenging. There is a
driving range as well, so everyone can have a go. A
development of apartments are currently being built to the
south of the course and it would seem by the plans that the
estate will grow quite quickly and be the main feature of the
area.
Son
Parc's other attraction is the beach which is perfect for
families and sun seekers alike. There are three access points,
one by road (turn left at the roundabout just after the golf
course) the car park is large enough even when the beach is
busy. There is a central path from behind the Sol Parc Hotel
and although its quite a walk, this path is suitable for
buggies and wheelchairs. The third path leads down from the
road adjacent to the Beach Club Apartments, this path is quite
steep and the last step is a drop of about 3 feet.
The
beach is patrolled by lifeguards, has sun beds and parasols,
pedalos and canoes for hire. At the western end there is a
beach side cafe, at this end of the beach the sand drops away
quite quickly. However, the eastern part (nearest the resort)
the sand shelves very gently and it is possible to walk out
for a few hundred yard before it gets deep. The sand is a bit
too soft to build sand castles away from the shoreline
however, the beach has thousands of shells of all sizes. Oh and
because of the geological makeup of this part of the island
some of the sand is pink. Because of its northerly aspect, the
prevailing wind, the Tramuntana, can spoil an otherwise
perfect setting. When this wind gets up, jellyfish, along with
some debris, can get blown in, so please take care.

| The
resort centre of Son Parc is very small, having only one
main street known as the strip. This is where most of the
bars and restaurants are situated. Needless to say, there is
not a huge choice, but (in my opinion), there are a few
which are quite good. Mama
Mias, Los Porches and the Pinomar. Rexas Pub, which is not
actually a pub serves delicious breakfasts and Jokers serves
English beers. There are also two car hire offices based
here.
Whilst
there are a few apartment complexes which are privately
owned there are three apart hotels. The Playa Park (German,)
the Sol Parc and the Beach Club. The latter two are owned by
Confortel. |

The
clientele at the Sol Parc and Beach Club are British and the
entertainment at both reflects this - great fun but not exactly
highbrow. The Sol Parc has the better facilities -- mini golf ,
bar barque restaurant and outdoor stage but the Beach Club has
spectacular views either across the sea or overlooking the bay
and beach. Both are well maintained, clean and the staff
welcoming and friendly.
There
are local bus services to both Mahon and Fornells daily except
Sunday. The doctors surgery is next door to the Playa Park and
he visits both apart hotels daily, however there is no pharmacy.
Neither is there an atm in Son Parc the nearest is in Fornells
or Arenal d'en Castell.
Son Parc
is an ideal resort for families especially those with young
children, teenagers however could get bored quickly as there are
very few shops and no amusement arcades.
For
a change of scenery the larger resort of Arenal d'en Castell is
near as is the fishing village of Fornells. Mahon
with its busy port, twice weekly market and bustling shopping
streets is only a short bus ride away.
Ciutadella the former moorish capital is a must to visit,
it's weekly market, designer shops, and sophisticated
restaurants make it a great day or evening out.
Son
Parc is a firm favourite with
families from all over the world.
